Banking & Finance Magnet"Meeting the Business Needs of Your Children and Our Community." In today's competitive environment, the demand for talented individuals that have mastered the ability to communicate effectively, work as a team member, understands technology and solve problems continues to grow. For nine years The Academy of Banking and Finance at Southwest Miami High School has helped meet our community's needs of by preparing its high school students for successful careers in the financial services industry. Through their academy experience, students gain an understanding of the relationship that exists between their education and their potential future earning power. Through industry trained teachers, internships and industry mentors, students are provided with the curriculum and guidance necessary for rewarding and fulfilling careers. Business Technology EducationOur mission is to provide a unique curriculum with enriched learning opportunities which fosters professionalism, academic excellence, and real world learning, through career path in the areas of Accounting Operations, Computer Programming and Web Design Services. In order to prepare students to enter a rapidly-changing, culturally-diverse, global society, the Business Department provides opportunities for students to become active members of FBLA, (Future Business Leaders of America), to pursuit industry certification, and qualify for scholarship opportunities. Our students are encouraged to get involved through participation in leadership activities, and community service projects, explore career opportunities and develop business skills to meet the demands of today’s business environment. ESOLThe English to Speakers of Other Languages Department welcomes you to Southwest Miami High School. Students participating in the ESOL Program will receive two ESOL courses in which their teachers will use the strategies necessary to ensure that they are meeting their educational potential. Language ArtsThe mission of the English Department at Southwest Miami High School is to provide a program that meets Florida state standards, as well as a program that encourages students to reach a higher level of excellence in the areas of reading, reading comprehension, writing, speaking and listening. Our hope is that all students who complete the four year English program at Southwest High School will develop an appreciation for literature, a knowledge of how to communicate effectively in oral and written English, achieve successful results on the FCAT, as well as other standardized tests, and gain a sense of responsibility to be active citizens who are interested in making a difference in society. MathematicsThe mission of the Mathematics Department at Southwest Miami High School is to offer an educational experience in mathematics that assists students to prepare for successful roles in society. This will be accomplished through our department’s commitment to excellent teaching, a well-designed curriculum, and a supportive environment for all our students. To support this mission we will be committed to professional development, making real world connections, and incorporating technology into our lessons. Students will be challenged to develop skills in analysis, reasoning, creativity, collaborative learning, and self-expression as they gain knowledge of mathematics. This will be accomplished through the broad level of mathematical classes offered which include Algebra I, Algebra I Honors, Algebra II, Algebra II Honors, Geometry, Geometry Honors, Integrated Math, Analysis of Function, Pre_Calculus, AP Statistics, AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, and Liberal Math. Also included is the opportunity to join Mu Alpha Theta a math honor society. ReadingOur Reading program offers a varied curriculum to tailor to the needs of the student. We currently offer classes in three Read 180 labs and one computer lab. Visual and Performing ArtsThe Visual and Performing Arts Department is made up of a group of artist that have a passion for education as well as for the arts. The team is made up of young and seasoned educators that bring their unique talent to our school. Heading the creative ensemble is Miami dancer Ingrid Houvenaeghel whose illusion dancers delight every audience. The members of the Visual Performing Arts Department are the diverse group. The band director Mr. Mike Guzman is responsible for many lively performances in our school and throughout the county. The joy of beautiful music can also be heard through the sounds of our students being led by the choral director Ms. Michelle Barica. If fine dramatic performance is what you prefer, the drama coach, Mr. Clint Hooper can provide that and much, more. His thespians can make you both cry and laugh with their dramatic performances. If you want to learn to be on television, Mr. Luis Aguirre can help you become an anchor man or woman. His T.V. production crew is responsible for the morning announcements in addition to many other fine television productions. If that isn't enough, add to the mix, the wonderful talents of artist/teachers; Ms. Shelly McCoy, Ms. Sarahyd Rodriguez and Ms. Rita Touzet. The three of them make make available their creative talents to our school. Through clay, photo and paint, they inspire their students to create many beautiful masterpieces. Vocational & Technology EducationThe Vocational and technology classes are composed of:
All of these classes will fulfill the student’s requirement for their Practical Arts credit. These classes range from level 1, beginners, up to level 11 (Automotive Services). Any Vocational or Technology course at Southwest that is a level 3 or above will earn an Honors credit. The Gold Seal Award for Vocational and or Technology courses is an outstanding scholarship that students can earn through these electives. This scholarship awards the recipient with 75 % college tuition paid for. World LanguagesThe teachers of the World Language Department are fully devoted to providing students with the knowledge of a foreign language in order to acquire speaking, reading and writing abilities. Students are also given an ample nourishment of the culture, geography, history, customs and traditions of the countries where those languages are spoken.
