In today's competitive environment, the demand for talented individuals that have mastered the ability to communicate effectively, work as a team member, understands technology and solve problems continues to grow.

For nine years The Academy of Banking and Finance at Southwest Miami High School has helped meet our community's needs of by preparing its high school students for successful careers in the financial services industry.

Through their academy experience, students gain an understanding of the relationship that exists between their education and their potential future earning power. Through industry trained teachers, internships and industry mentors, students are provided with the curriculum and guidance necessary for rewarding and fulfilling careers.

Our alumni network provides our graduates with professional and social networking experiences, access to scholarships, job prospects, and mentoring, services opportunities.

Business Technology Education

Our mission is to provide a unique curriculum with enriched learning opportunities which fosters professionalism, academic excellence, and real world learning, through career path in the areas of Accounting Operations, Computer Programming and Web Design Services.

In order to prepare students to enter a rapidly-changing, culturally-diverse, global society, the Business Department provides opportunities for students to become active members of FBLA, (Future Business Leaders of America), to pursuit industry certification, and qualify for scholarship opportunities.

Our students are encouraged to get involved through participation in leadership activities, and community service projects, explore career opportunities and develop business skills to meet the demands of today’s business environment.

ESOL

The English to Speakers of Other Languages Department welcomes you to Southwest Miami High School. Students participating in the ESOL Program will receive two ESOL courses in which their teachers will use the strategies necessary to ensure that they are meeting their educational potential. We also provide assistance in the student's native language to help our students achieve their scholastic goals. We look forward to a successful school year.

Language Arts

The mission of the English Department at Southwest Miami High School is to provide a program that meets Florida state standards, as well as a program that encourages students to reach a higher level of excellence in the areas of reading, reading comprehension, writing, speaking and listening.

Our hope is that all students who complete the four year English program at Southwest High School will develop an appreciation for literature, a knowledge of how to communicate effectively in oral and written English, achieve successful results on the FCAT, as well as other standardized tests, and gain a sense of responsibility to be active citizens who are interested in making a difference in society.

As a department, we offer specialized programs such as Honors/Advanced Placement courses, as well as Journalism courses.

We look forward to a great school year.

Mathematics

The mission of the Mathematics Department at Southwest Miami High School is to offer an educational experience in mathematics that is relevant to the real world and reflects the knowledge and skills that our students need for success in college and careers. To support this mission we will be committed to continuing professional development, to help students make real world connections, to emphasize mathematical modeling, and to incorporate technology into our lessons. We will employ various assessment techniques, use a variety of teaching styles, and maintain an intervention plan for students that might be having difficulty.


Students will be challenged to develop mathematical skills in analysis, reasoning, creativity, collaborative learning, and self-expression as they gain knowledge in mathematics. Southwest Miami High School is committed to offering classes of various levels that maintain high academic standards which include Regular, Honors, Gifted, and Advancement Placement.  Courses offered include Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Advanced Topics in Mathematics, Precalculus, AP Statistics, AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, and Math for College Readiness. Also included is the opportunity to join Mu Alpha Theta a Math Honor Society.


As a department we hope the information provided will help students set their mathematical goals to realize their full mathematical potential.

Reading

Our Reading program offers a varied curriculum to tailor to the needs of the student. We currently offer classes in three Read 180 labs and one computer lab. As a result, students are exposed to the scientifically researched-based Scholastic software in addition to the FCAT Explorer and Florida Achieves.
Additionally, our students are exposed to multi-leveled classroom libraries that cater to their reading level. More importantly, our teachers use a plethora of reading strategies—graphic organizers, context clues, reciprocal teaching, QARs—to enhance instruction.

Science

The Science Department welcomes all students to prepare for the future filled with science and technology. A variety of science courses are offered so that student may develop their individual talents in science beyond the basic requirements.

Classes offered include the basic requirements of Earth/Space Science, Biology and Physical Science and the more advanced to rigorous programs in Chemistry, Physics, Anatomy and Physiology, Marine Science I & II, AP Chemistry, AP Physics and AP Environmental Science.

Extracurricular activities are also offered through service clubs. The interest-based Ecology Club is open to all students, whether or not enrolled in science classes; and the science honor society of Phi Beta Chi, available to students with 3.0 GPA that have completed at least Earth/Space science.

We encourage our students to get involved.

Visual and Performing Arts

The Visual and Performing Arts Department is made up of a group of artist that have a passion for education as well as for the arts. The team is made up of young and seasoned educators that bring their unique talent to our school. Heading the creative ensemble is Miami dancer Ingrid Houvenaeghel whose illusion dancers delight every audience. The members of the Visual Performing Arts Department are the diverse group. The band director Mr. Mike Guzman is responsible for many lively performances in our school and throughout the county. The joy of beautiful music can also be heard through the sounds of our students being led by the choral director Ms. Michelle Barica. If fine dramatic performance is what you prefer, the drama coach, Mr. Clint Hooper can provide that and much, more. His thespians can make you both cry and laugh with their dramatic performances. If you want to learn to be on television, Mr. Luis Aguirre can help you become an anchor man or woman. His T.V. production crew is responsible for the morning announcements in addition to many other fine television productions. If that isn't enough, add to the mix, the wonderful talents of artist/teachers; Ms. Shelly McCoy, Ms. Sarahyd Rodriguez and Ms. Rita Touzet. The three of them make make available their creative talents to our school. Through clay, photo and paint, they inspire their students to create many beautiful masterpieces. Whether it is painting, photograph or striking ceramic sculpture, these artists make sure that our students' creations are beautiful self expressions.

Vocational & Technology Education

The Vocational and technology classes are composed of:

  • Automotive Services Technology taught by Mr. Jorge Sanchez and Mr. Nestor Yero
  • Cosmetology taught by Ms. Belinda Butler
  • Drafting/Illustrating Design Technology taught by Mr. Miles Woolley
  • Communication Technology taught by Mr. Joel Mendez
  • Material and Processes Technology taught by Mr. Martin K. Wild
  • Family and Consumer Science taught by Ms. Susan Dellow

All of these classes will fulfill the student’s requirement for their Practical Arts credit. These classes range from level 1, beginners, up to level 11 (Automotive Services). Any Vocational or Technology course at Southwest that is a level 3 or above will earn an Honors credit. The Gold Seal Award for Vocational and or Technology courses is an outstanding scholarship that students can earn through these electives. This scholarship awards the recipient with 75 % college tuition paid for.

Our goal and mission a Vocational and Technology teachers is to instill in our students skills and abilities that they can use for a “LIFE TIME”.

World Languages

The teachers of the World Language Department are fully devoted to providing students with the knowledge of a foreign language in order to acquire speaking, reading and writing abilities.

Students are also given an ample nourishment of the culture, geography, history, customs and traditions of the countries where those languages are spoken.

We proudly create a community of multi-cultural individuals with a great exposure to various components of the world.
